Bukhara State Medical Institute (BSMI) was established on August 24, 1990, in accordance with Resolution No. 850 of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. On August 19, 1991, by Decision No. 21/3 of the Council of People’s Deputies of the Bukhara Region, the Institute was renamed in honor of Abu Ali ibn Sino (Avicenna). The Institute operates within the organizational structure of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
BSMI holds State Accreditation Certificate No. 48 dated July 28, 2022 (Series OT No. 5000048) confirming compliance with the status of a higher education institution and authorization to conduct bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, valid for five years. It also holds State Accreditation Certificate No. 45 dated July 28, 2022 (Series OO’YUKT No. 6000047) granting the right to conduct postgraduate education, valid for five years.
The Institute operates in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Law “On Education”, national development programs, and relevant governmental resolutions. Since 2022, BSMI has been granted academic and financial independence in accordance with Presidential Resolutions No. PP-60 and PP-61.
BSMI employs 720 staff members, including 97 doctors of sciences and professors, 253 candidates of sciences (PhD) and associate professors, 100 senior teachers and assistants.Education is provided in Uzbek, Russian, English, and Turkish at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels.
Currently, the Institute includes 5 faculties, 53 departments, 9 bachelor’s degree programs, 30 master’s specialties, more than 30 clinical residency specialties, and 20 joint educational programs. More than 10891 students and residents are enrolled.
The total area of the Institute is 82,000 square meters, including educational buildings, a sports complex, an information and resource center, a simulation center, a library, and dormitories. Clinical training is conducted at 60 clinics and diagnostic centers.
BSMI maintains active international cooperation with more than 180 foreign universities and organizations in 25 countries and hosts over 2102 international students.
The institute trains highly educated personnel in the new edition of the Law “On Education” in the following 7 areas and 1 international program:
General medicine – 6 years;
Biomedical Engineering – 5 years;
Pediatrics – 6 years;
Dentistry – 5 years;
Medical prevention work – 5 years;
Higher Nursing – 4 years;
Pharmacy – 5 years.
