Abstract

Oral ulcers are usually painful lesions that are associated with various conditions de-veloping in the oral cavity. According to available data, the prevalence of trophic ulcers of the oral cavity is 9%, however, the diagnosis of oral lesions can be difficult, since they are a non-specific symptom of several diseases. The differential diagnosis can range from a classic infectious disease (for example, herpangina and hand disease) against a background of nutrient deficiency, gastrointes-tinal disorders, inflammation (for example, lichen planus, pemphigoid of the mucous membrane) to side effects of drugs (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or chronic dysentery diseases (for example, sar-coidosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, familial Mediterranean fever). A correct differential diagnosis is necessary to prescribe appropriate treatment, taking into account all possible causes of ulcers in the oral cavity. Therefore, patients with trophic ulcers of the oral cavity are treated by many different specialists, such as dentists, family doctors, pediatricians, rheumatologists, hematologists, gastroen-terologists and otorhinolaryngologists. A systematic literature search and a descriptive review of the literature on potential diseases associated with trophic ulcers of the oral cavity were conducted.
