History of the Department of Pathological Physiology at Bukhara State Medical Institute
The history of the Department of Pathological Physiology at Bukhara State Medical Institute is closely linked to the development of medical education in Uzbekistan. The department was established on February 4, 1991, by Order No. 13/4, issued by the first rector of the institute, Professor A.I. Mominov. At that time, PhD in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Makhmud Khamidovich Akhmedov, who had previously worked at the Bukhara Pedagogical Institute, was appointed as the first head of the department.
In October 1993, upon the recommendation of the institute’s rector, PhD in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Roziya Abdurakhmanovna Usmonova was invited to the department and appointed as its head. Her appointment marked a new and successful era in the department’s history, bringing significant scientific achievements. During this period:
- Six PhD dissertations were successfully defended.
- The department’s teaching and research activities significantly improved.
- The laboratory was enriched with necessary experimental equipment.
- In 1999, several students participated in the Republican Science Olympiad in Andijan and won prestigious awards.
R.A. Usmonova led the department from 1993 to 2005.
Mergers and Structural Changes 2005: The Physiology and Pathological Physiology departments were merged into the Department of Physiology and Pathological Physiology, and PhD in Medical Sciences Baxtiyor Burkhanovich Hasanov was appointed as the head.2006-2012: PhD in Medical Sciences U.R. To’raev served as the department head. During this period:Over 40 educational manuals were created.Numerous scientific articles were published.PhD candidate F.R. Karimova successfully defended her dissertation.2012-2015: PhD in Biological Sciences Iskandar Shavkievich Sodiqov became the department head. This period saw the development of multimedia materials, the publication of several research articles, and the signing of agreements with the Regional Oncology Dispensary and VKTTM for conducting laboratory experiments due to the lack of a dedicated laboratory space.2015: The Department of Physiology and Pathological Physiology was integrated into the Department of Pharmacology, with PhD in Medical Sciences O.M. Ernazarov appointed as department head.2017: The Department of Physiology and Pathological Physiology was re-established as an independent department, with PhD in Medical Sciences I.Sh. Sodiqov appointed as the head of the Physiology Department.
This department continues to contribute to the advancement of medical education and research in Uzbekistan.
In 2005, the Department of Physiology and the Department of Pathological Physiology were merged into a single unit called the Department of Physiology and Pathological Physiology, with PhD in Medical Sciences Baxtiyor Burkhanovich Hasanov appointed as the head of the department.
From 2012 to 2015, PhD in Biological Sciences Iskandar Shavkievich Sodiqov served as the head of the department. During this period:

International Cooperation
Life is life! A person’s birth and departure from this world follow certain laws, and their predisposition to various diseases largely depends on the surrounding environment, internal state, and psychological well-being.
Physical and mental health are key to a person’s self-improvement. No one should suffer from illness. Recovery depends directly on the professionalism, knowledge, experience, and human qualities of a doctor. Every individual aspires to leave behind a good legacy and a respected name.
Thanks to the new educational system, many opportunities have emerged, such as:
- independent learning for students,
- freedom to choose subjects and professors,
- participation in academic mobility programs,
- competing with graduates of European universities.
In our country, great attention is paid to academic exchange for students, professors, and administrative staff of universities. This is because academic mobility is a crucial component of the integration of Uzbek universities into the international educational space.
Moreover, academic mobility plays a key role in ensuring the quality of education. It includes several main directions:
- strengthening scientific, academic, and economic cooperation with leading universities worldwide,
- training highly qualified specialists based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS),
- enhancing student and faculty participation in international cooperation projects,
- establishing joint educational programs with foreign universities,
- opening research centers and improving their operations.
The Bukhara State Medical Institute is actively implementing international cooperation programs.
A notable example is the participation of the Head of the Department of Pathological Physiology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor M.A. Abdullayeva, and Associate Professor of the Department of Internal Diseases in Family Medicine, L.B. Saidova, in an academic mobility program at the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi International Kazakh-Turkish University.
Such programs contribute to experience exchange, improvement of the educational process, integration into the global medical community, and ultimately, the training of highly qualified specialists at an international level.
