History of the department
The history of the General Hygiene Department at Bukhara State Medical Institute is mainly associated with the development of medical education in Uzbekistan. The department was established in the 1991-1992 academic year by order of the first rector of the Abu Ali ibn Sina Bukhara State Medical Institute, Professor A.I. Mominov. The aim was to teach students the history of general hygiene, explain its role in medicine, introduce sanitary laws and regulations, and clarify state standards. The head of the department was appointed as PhD U.X. Khasanov, with assistants Manasova I.S., Jumayeva A.A., Mirzoyeva M.R., and Fayzullayeva F.U. actively working at the department.
In the 2005 academic year, the department was merged with the Public Health Department, introducing new subjects such as Medical Service Marketing, Valeology, and Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases. Teaching processes were carried out based on new standard and working curricula. Faculty members included Associate Professors X.N. Qayumov and O‘.X. Khasanov, Senior Lecturers Salomova H.J., Qobilova G.A., Sharipova N.S., Atayeva M.A., and lecturers A.A. Jumayeva, Z.J. Jumayeva, D.B. Rajabova, and X.X. Shirinova.

During the 2017-2018 academic year, the department included Associate Professors X.N. Qayumov and O‘.X. Khasanov, Senior Lecturers Salomova H.J., Qobilova G.A., Sharipova N.S., I.S. Manasova, and lecturers A.A. Jumayeva, Z.J. Jumayeva, D.B. Rajabova, X.X. Shirinova, Yuldashova Sh.T., and Mavlyanova S.Sh. In January 2018, PhD Atoyeva M.A. was appointed as the head of the department.
In the 2018-2019 academic year, new subjects, “Introduction to Specialty” for 1st-year students of the Medical Prevention Faculty and “Hygiene and Medical Ecology” for Medical Biology students, were introduced. Teaching was conducted based on updated standard and working curricula. Faculty members included Professor PhD Nuraliyev N.A., PhD and department head Atoyeva M.A., Associate Professor X.O. Qosimov, Senior Lecturer Manasova I.S., and lecturers Salomova H.J., Qobilova G.A., A.A. Jumayeva, Z.J. Jumayeva, D.B. Rajabova, Yuldashova Sh.T., and Voxidov U.G. External part-time faculty included PhD To‘xtayev A.A. and PhD Baratova M.S. On September 9, 2019, the General Hygiene Department became an independent department.
In the 2019-2020 academic year, the department was split into two. X.O. Qosimov was appointed as the head of the General Hygiene Department, with faculty members including Manasova I.S., Jumayeva A.A., Jumayeva Z.J., Nurova Z.X., and Mirzoyev O.M. In the 2020-2021 academic year, new faculty members included Ortiqov A.A., Nabiyeva S.S., Yadgarova Sh.S., Muhammedova Z.R., and Zokirov V.Z., as well as part-time lecturers Kosimov I.X. and Ismoilova M.Z. In the 2021-2022 academic year, Olimova D.V. and Sharipova G.I. joined the department, while Jumayeva Z.J.’s contract was terminated. Additional staff included Ibroximov K.I., Hakimov T.B., and Oxunjonova M.Z.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, the General Hygiene and Ecology Department was split into two: the 1st Hygiene and the 2nd Hygiene Departments. The 2nd Hygiene Department was officially established in the 2024-2025 academic year, with Associate Professor DSc G.I. Sharipova appointed as head of the department. Faculty members include PhD Yadgarova Sh.S., PhD Karshiyeva D.R., PhD Qodirov O.O‘, and assistants Tuxtaeva M.M., Nurov S.A., Ismoilov F.F., and doctoral student Olimova D.V.
Initially, the 2nd Hygiene Department was part of the General Hygiene and Ecology Department but became an independent entity in the 2023-2024 academic year under the name Private Hygiene Department. In the 2024-2025 academic year, it was renamed the 2nd Hygiene Department. The department provides education in subjects such as Communal Hygiene, Occupational Hygiene, Nutrition Hygiene, Child and Adolescent Hygiene, and Radiation Hygiene to 3rd, 4th, and 5th-year students of the Biomedical Faculty’s Medical Prevention track.
All faculty members conduct lectures and seminars based on the state educational standards, curricula, and academic plans approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In addition, they work to enhance students’ spiritual and moral education.
The department’s faculty members, including DSc Associate Professor G.I. Sharipova, PhD Yadgarova Sh.S., PhD Karshiyeva D.R., PhD Qodirov O.O‘, and assistants Tuxtaeva M.M., Nurov S.A., Ismoilov F.F., and doctoral student Olimova D.V., actively participate in promoting laws, state programs, presidential decrees, and government decisions among the public. They also contribute to increasing students’ spiritual and intellectual development. The department regularly organizes scientific and theoretical conferences and symposia at both national and international levels.
The department maintains close academic ties with Tashkent Medical Academy, Samarkand State Medical Institute, and Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute. In 2023, the department produced more than 60 scientific articles and theses, one grant project, two teaching aids, three monographs, and several research agreements.
Faculty members focus on expanding students’ knowledge of nutrition hygiene and developing proper and rational eating habits. The “Young Hygienists” club, with more than 30 student participants, promotes scientific research, with students presenting theses and reports at academic conferences. This work not only benefits students’ academic and research development but also improves healthcare quality and public health.
In modern Uzbekistan, the department actively collaborates with international scholars, studies foreign experiences, and conducts comparative analyses. Academic mobility programs involve institutions in Kazakhstan (M. Auezov South Kazakhstan State University), Ukraine, Russia, and Tajikistan. These partnerships contribute to the development of new-generation textbooks and teaching methods. The department ensures students fully comply with sanitary laws and standards while fostering patriotism and commitment to their homeland.
Scientific research works
The department has been in close contact with the departments of TTA, SamTI, TashPTI, AnTI “General hygiene and radiation hygiene” on educational and methodological issues.
During the activity of the department in 2023, more than 70 scientific articles and theses, 1 textbook, 3 study guides, 1 monograph were prepared and published by the staff of the department.
