Medical Chemistry Department was established in 1991 as a “General and Bioorganic Chemistry” department, a Head of the department was M.R. Amonov. At that time, professors and teachers contributed to the organization of the department and the educational process: associate professors Khayrullaev Ch.K., Dzhuraev Yu., Nazarov I.I., assistants Mavlonov Kh.N., Sodikova S.S’h., S’hukurov I.B. ., Mirzametov B.S., Amonova Kh.I. Bozorova S.O., Dzhuraeva S.B., Kholikova R.F. Laboratory assistants: Safarova R., Nuriddinova X., Umurov F.
In 1993, the department was merged with the Department of Biological Chemistry and renamed into the Department of Biological and Bioorganic Chemistry, headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor N.A. Rakhmatov. Author of over 200 scientific papers.
From 1995 to 2002 the department was headed by associate professor Amonov M.R. During his scientific research, he prepared more than 300 scientific articles, scientific and methodological manuals. In 2005, under the guidance of his supervisor Professor O.M. Yoriev, M.R.Amonov successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on specialty 02.00.16 – Chemistry and technology of composite materials on the topic “Water-soluble polymer compositions based on local raw materials for use in the production of cotton fiber and the technology of their production” at a specialized council at the Center for Science and Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In 2002-2014, the department was headed by Associate Professor I.I. Nazarov, who in 1991 defended his thesis on “Radical polymerization and copolymerization of benzoxazolyl methyl methacrylates and properties of polymers based on them” in specialty 02.00.06. – Chemistry of polymers. In 2002 he was awarded the title of Associate Professor of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Associate professor Nazarov I.I. during his scientific and pedagogical activity has publis’hed more than 180 articles and abstracts in domestic and foreign journals and conferences. Prepared 1 electronic textbook, 1 textbook and 20 manuals.
In 2004, the assistant of the department I.B. S’hukurov defended his dissertation on the topic “Metabolism of glutathione and its processes of peroxidation and detoxification in acute pancreatitis” and received a PhD in biological sciences. From March 2005 to May 2015 the department was renamed to the Department of Bioinorganic, Bioorganic and Biological Chemistry.

In 2009, senior teacher Amonova Kh.I. defended her thesis on “Development of technology for producing cost-effective polymer compositions based on starch and sericin” and received a PhD.
From 2014 to 2015 the department was headed by professor Yoriev O.M. He is the author of over 300 scientific articles, over 20 patents and inventions. Yoriev O.M. recognized as the best scientific advisor in 2002 by the republican foundation “Ustoz”. Under his scientific supervision, 25 candidates and doctors of chemical and technical sciences were trained. He is the founder of the Bukhara Polymer Science School.
In May 2015, the department was renamed into “Medical and Biological Chemistry”. From January 2016 to September 2017, the department was headed by associate professor I.B.S’hukurov
In September 2017, the department was renamed into “Medical Chemistry”.
The department was headed from September to October 2017 by Ikhtiyarova G.A., from October 2017 to October 2018 by associate professor Nazarov I.I. Since November 2018, the department is headed by PhD L.N. Niyazov. Over the past 3 years, the department signed about 10 agreements on cooperation with such universities as with Volgograd State Medical University, Chuvash State University (Russia); South Kazakhstan State University named after M. Auezov (Kazakhstan); Istanbul Jerrahpasha University (Turkey) and other universities. During this period, the teaching staff of Medical Chemistry Department prepared 1 textbook, 4 tutorials, 3 monographs, more than 10 electronic textbooks and programs. All professors and teachers of the department organized lectures, master classes and seminars at the universities of Russia, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

Since September 2020, the department has been divided into two departments: “Medical Chemistry” and “Biochemistry”. Currently, Medical Chemistry Department is headed by Associate Professor L.N. Niyazov.
Today the Department of Medical Chemistry employs 3 associate professors and 8 assistants. Professors and teachers of the department carry out research on the synthesis of biologically active substances, as well as methods of teaching chemistry in higher medical educational institutions.

The department conducts courses in Medical chemistry for the directions of the first courses of general medicine, professional education: medical and pedagogical work, medical prevention, pediatric affairs, dentistry, medical biology and higher nursing, also in Russian and Englis’h for joint educational programs of the institute on Chemistry, General and inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry, Colloidal chemistry, Pharmaceutical inorganic chemistry, Pharmaceutical organic chemistry and other disciplines.
The department has lecture rooms, rooms for practical studies, separate rooms for laboratory work. They are equipped with equipment and chemical reagents necessary for laboratory work.
