Abstract
Vulvovaginitis is a common reason women seek medical attention and has negative reproductive and psychosocial consequences. Correct diagnosis is the basis of effective treatment, but misdiagnosis of this condition approaches 50%, which increases the risk of recurrence. Over the past 3 decades, new molecular tests, more sensitive and specific, have made it possible to diagnose vaginitis, allowing more accurate diagnosis and timely treatment, while reducing healthcare costs and improving the quality of life of patients. Clinical approaches and professional guidelines lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of acute and recurrent vulvovaginitis.
